If you want the Behind The Music biography read on knowing the best parts are experienced live with his show Sex, Drugs, and Advertising.
Nathan began his journey studying African tribal rock drumming under jazz and rock great Ginger Baker. He absorbed the mad man’s gifts and embarked on a 10-year career as a touring rock drummer for Dogwater, Guava, Immaculate Destruction, Drugstore Alibi, and Hollywood underground darlings of the mid 90’s Super Model #9.
Rock stardom is an elusive beast that left Nathan with bad teeth and worse credit. In early ’97 he established the Millennium Cabaret and a succession of popular after hours clubs in Los Angeles that culminated in 1231 North Vine or “Vas Llegas” to those in the know. They were wildly successful and completely illegal.
Vas Llegas led to a gig at boutique motion picture advertising firm Intralink where Nathan acted as driver and dub room assistant. In ’98 he discovered the world of trailer voice over by recording greats Don LaFontaine, Jim Cummings, Gene McGarr, and George delHoyo. He also had the good fortune to watch Justin Peed establish his career as a voice actor from the edit bays of Intralink.
After his first year in film advertising Nathan established the music department at The Ant Farm which soon became one of the largest media advertising firms in the world. Armed with less than 50 cd’s and a “boom box” housed in a storage closet he developed one of the most successful music media departments in advertising with 8 employees, 25,000 music titles, and 2 music publishing companies.
The Ant Farm included many talented editors, producers, copy-writers, and engineers who shepherded projects such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Shrek, Harry Potter, and The Lord Of The Rings franchises. The music department also helped launch the voice acting careers of Tony Rogers and Anna Graves who did scratch reads and early auditions while contributing hard work to the department.
In 2002 Nathan produced “Requiem For A Tower” (RFAT) with full orchestra and used the song to strong effect in the Lord of the Rings Two Towers campaign. RFAT became one of the most successful motion picture advertising songs in history and inspired Nathan and his team to tackle Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” in the trailer style.
Nathan later founded recording label Corner Stone Cues and in 2007 recorded “Kashmir” with the London Studio Orchestra, members of Guns N Roses, and Bob Marley’s youngest son Damian Marley. The new cover was titled “Ten Years Kashmir Mvt I & II” since Zeppelin’s “Ten Years Gone” and “Kashmir” segued into each other.
By 2011, Nathan produced over 1,000 songs and sfx and split with his original partners from The Ant Farm and Howling Entertainment. The catalogue they built was divided with most songs administered by long time partner APM Music in the library Nathan founded, Siren Cues.
Since that time Nathan licensed RFAT and “Kashmir” under the Corner Stone Cues label for worldwide sports franchises and in the 2014 X-Men: Days of Future Past campaign. Fans worldwide also score their favorite media using both songs on Youtube.
2012 became a year of reflection. Many of Nathan’s musical dreams were realized. AIR Studios in London, founded by Beatles producer Sir George Martin, scored their studio promo with “Ten Years Kashmir Mvt II”. It was time to reinvent!
Watching Don LaFontaine and George delHoyo had a huge effect on Nathan. Sharing the ascension of great voice actors like Anna Graves, Justin Peed, and Tony Rogers inspired him to begin performing again as a voice actor and story-teller comedian.
Kalmenson & Kalmenson was the innogural stop during the first 3 years of education. Nathan studied under instructors Scott Holst, Bob Bergen, Cedering Fox, Tony Oliver, Lori Alan, Pat Fraley, Mick Wingert, Joyce Castellanos, and Gene Cordes. He continues his education to this day including performing with the Upright Citizens Brigade.
The life experience Nathan gained with the amazing heights and bitter lows in media and advertising have produced colorful characters that now grace video games, film, and product advertising. Nathan is considered an exciting and irreverent natural storyteller. Be sure to catch the whole story live onstage in his comedic throw-down: Sex, drugs, and advertising.
